Hive Fleet: The Winged Threat

Flying Hive Tyrant

Since I started collecting White Dwarf,  I’ve loved the 3rd edition Hive Tyrant. While it most definitely takes its cues from the Alien Queen, it still looks incredible, even with its typical 3rd edition grin. The problem I’ve always had is that it just doesn’t look like it should be able to hold that magnificent crest up!

These thin, thin limbs do actually play into my plans for the monster, as I’d like to rebuild it into a flying Hive Tyrant. This sort of conversion has been done before, and I plan on making it fit the aesthetic of the Harridan. Shifting the head into a horizontal position to match the body will form a snake-like shape, as seen below:

Then I can add a couple of multi-Devourer gun arms, similar to the Harpy and crone weapons, so it can strafe and fire from the air, with some in-built scythes to perform dive-bomb attacks!

Since drawing these sketches, I’ve decided to actually give him SOME taloned legs, as he is meant to be able to land. These will be built into the wings, and able to follow his body as he flies.

I also drew up a modification for the Hive Crone model, mostly a body shift so that it isn’t just flying, more hovering. I’m not entirely sure I’ll go with this pose if/when I get the model, but I like the addition of a LOT of spikes for its Vector Strikes. In terms of its breath weapon, I’ll either add some tubes along the torso, or just have them “inside” its chest.

It needs SOME sort of landing arms after all! I can’t imagine the monster just flying around until it runs out of breath, then collapsing to the ground and being eaten by some Rippers. What a poor ending!
